WHAT DO WE DO?
Special Stars Foundation is a not-for-profit registered charity. (Registered charity number: 1156237). Our focus is to improve the quality of life for people with significant learning and physical disabilities and their families across Hull and East Yorkshire. We achieve this by providing a diverse calendar of creative learning and social activities. We also offer a range of support, training and advice services for parent carers
WHO DO WE HELP?
We support just over 2,100 families affected by disability in the Hull and East Yorkshire region, operating from our new location on the 3rd floor within Princes Quay in the heart of Hull City Centre
Here we have a huge event space from which we run inclusive activities for disabled children and creative learning and social events for adults with learning disabilities. We also run support groups, craft workshops, seminars and training sessions here for parent carers
Next-door in our adjacent unit we have a specialist shop stocking disability specific equipment, sensory toys, learning resources and much more! Our shop is open Monday to Saturday and customers are welcome to pop in and browse, or order online for click and collect or have their order posted
Here we also have a large sensory room, kitted out with a some fantastic sensory equipment, fully wheelchair accessible and with a hoist so everyone can enjoy an amazing sensory experience
Nationally, our online shop is open to all, we pride ourselves on stocking a variety of specialist disability-related equipment and sensory toys at low prices, helping families to afford much-needed quality items whilst also helping us to fund our specialist services for disabled people
Special Stars was founded in October 2012 by Natalie Barnes, who is now our Charity Manager. Natalie has two sons, who both have Autism, and was frustrated at the lack of appropriate provisions for them and so set up a playgroup for children with special needs
The group was popular and a committee of parents was soon formed. Special Stars Foundation then became a registered voluntary organisation, with the support of ERVAS, and began to create a calendar of inclusive activities around the region
On the 18th March 2014, Special Stars Foundation officially became a registered charity, by which time the number of families accessing our services was in their hundreds
In November 2016, Special Stars Foundation took on our first premises in central Hull as a permanent base for the charity to operate from in the historic Old Town area
In November 2021 the charity secured two large adjacent units in Princes Quay, which has given us a much bigger space to run our popular activities from, plus open our new shop and sensory room
We now have just over 2,100 families accessing our services across Hull and East Yorkshire and are continually processing new membership requests
