WHAT DO WE DO?
Special Stars Foundation is a not-for-profit registered charity. (Registered charity number: 1156237). Our focus is to improve the quality of life for people with significant learning and physical disabilities and their families across Hull and East Yorkshire. We achieve this by providing a diverse calendar of creative learning and social activities. We also offer a range of support, training and advice services for parent careers.
WHO DO WE HELP?
We support just over 2,050 families affected by disability in the Hull and East Yorkshire region, operating from our premises on the historic High Street of central Hull. Here we have our private therapy room, a training suite, capable of presenting to around 20 delegates and a large informal multi-purpose room with soft furnishing and sensory toys where we run support groups and advice sessions. This building also houses our charity's offices where we coordinate the many in house and external activities we provide.
Nationally, we provide an online shop stocking a variety of specialist disability-related equipment and sensory toys at low prices, helping families to afford much-needed quality items whilst also helping us to fund our specialist services for disabled people.
Special Stars was founded in October 2012 by Natalie Barnes, who is now our Charity Manager. Natalie has two sons, who both have Autism, and was frustrated at the lack of appropriate provisions for them and so set up a playgroup for children with special needs.
The group was popular and a committee of parents was soon formed. Special Stars Foundation then became a registered voluntary organisation, with the support of ERVAS, and began to create a calendar of inclusive activities around the region. On the 18th March 2014, Special Stars Foundation officially became a registered charity, by which time the number of families accessing our services was in their hundreds.
In November 2016, Special Stars Foundation took on our first premises in central Hull as a permanent base for the charity to operate from. We now have just over 2,050 families accessing our services across Hull and East Yorkshire and are continually processing new membership requests.
